When you will take your practical driving test, the Driver Tester will ask you to demonstrate a Turn About, also known as 3 point turn. Most pupils are dreading this manoeuvre for the Test. But if you prepare for this manoeuvre with practice and supervision with an Approved Driver Instructor (ADI), the manoeuvre can be done without stress.
While manoeuvring you must maintain reasonable progress & show consideration to other roads users. Watch out for the safety of pedestrians. Be prepared to stop if it is safe to do so.
1) Most importantly parking of the vehicle for the Manoeuvre is crucial, make sure that the vehicle is 1/4 length of a door from the kerb, 0,25 metres or 7 inches away from the kerb & at list 5 metres from a bend or a junction. As you can be marked on Parking. Do not block private entrance as well. With the vehicle in a position, it will be 50 % of the Manoeuvre success.
2) While manoeuvring, you should make proper use of the vehicle controls, (with Clutch & Steering wheel). Take correct & proper observations (check your blind spot in good time). Look for any hazards. Follow GOSH routine, (Gear, Observation, Signal, Hand Break).
3) Insure that we will make a sharp turn on the right with the vehicle till the other side of the Road (opposite Kerb). To do though, make good use of vehicle control. Move slowly, by using clutch & steer quickly. Secure vehicle with Hand break. That will avoid to incline or rolling back.
4) Then you will need to reverse on the left, again make sure that you take a good observation before moving off. Look right, left & right again. While reversing, look surrounding, stop with any obstruction.
5) Finally you will need to make your last manoeuvre on the Right to clear the Road. Check observation by looking left, right & left again to insure that it is safe to procced.
If you are struggling with the Turnabout (3 points turns) & that you have your Driving test coming, maybe practice with an ADI is advisable as this manoeuvre can be challenging. You can book a pre-test with Castletown School of Motoring on https://www.castletownsom.com/contact/
